What is FLAGG?

Families Learn And Grow Gardens is a wonderful new community project that will provide the opportunity for individuals and families to plant, prepare and produce a bountiful harvest of flowers and vegetables in their own garden plot.

Who will be eligible for the FLAGG project?

The major emphasis of FLAGG community garden project is to provide plots for poverty level individuals or families based on the State of Ohio 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. To encourage participation of these eligible citizens (must reside in Ashland County) a “GET STARTED AND GROW” garden kit will be provided to each individual/family. The only skill needed to start your garden will be responsibility! You will be expected to take care of our garden throughout the growing season by signing the FLAGG Agreement of Responsibility.

Because of the availability of several garden plots community members (not meeting poverty level guidelines) will also have the opportunity to assume the responsibility of a plot at a nominal fee. (6’x6’/$15.00 12’x6’/$20.00 12’x12’/$25.00) A “GET STARTED AND GROW” garden kit can also be purchased for $25.00 if this would be your first garden experience.

Why will FLAGG be unique?

Because three important ingredients go with your garden plot…

Education – No matter if you have never had a garden or you are an experienced gardener you will learn so much from the volunteer Master Gardeners on preparing your plot to canning the rewards of your labor.

Nutrition – Learn the importance of healthy life styles through enjoying what you grow. Obesity is a major health concern, especially in our children and wonderful exercise and sunshine by “working” in your garden will help promote your personal and family health.

Finance Cost Savings – Be amazed at how your food expenses can be lowered by reaping the benefits of producing vegetables from your garden. Mini-Farmer Markets are also part of the summer services of the community garden happening in 2010.

Where will the FLAGG Community Garden project be located?

Approximately 20 Acres of land is being made available through the generous support of Town & Country Co-op. The FLAGG Gardens will be located between Cleveland Avenue and Middle Rowsburg Road (Close to Cahn Grove Park on opposite side of street). Flagg participants can select a plot size of 6’x6’, 12’x6’ or 12’x12’.
