Strength in Every Step: Supporting Kidney Patients in Ashland County

A kidney disease diagnosis is life-changing — but for the patients served by the Kidney Foundation of Ohio, it is not the end of their story. Every day, these individuals demonstrate extraordinary resilience as they navigate treatment, financial strain, and lifestyle changes, all while continuing to fight for their health and their future.

Many kidney patients attend life-sustaining dialysis treatments three days a week, often traveling long distances to do so. Others are working toward the possibility of a transplant. While the challenges are significant, these patients refuse to let their diagnosis define or control their lives. The Kidney Foundation of Ohio helps strengthen that resilience by breaking down barriers that stand in the way of care — especially transportation and access to essential medications.

When Help Means Hope

Ryan (name changed for privacy) was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease in March of 2025. His diagnosis led to several weeks in the hospital and more than $4,000 in medical bills. Living on Social Security alongside his wife, the couple already struggled to cover monthly expenses that exceeded their income.

Ryan must travel more than 25 miles to reach the nearest dialysis center. With rising gas prices, the cost of transportation became a serious threat to his ability to attend treatment — something no patient should have to choose between.

Through funding made possible by United Way of Ashland County, the Kidney Foundation of Ohio was able to provide Ryan with $400 to help offset transportation costs. That support eased the financial burden and ensured he could continue receiving the life-saving care he depends on. Ryan and his wife expressed deep gratitude for the assistance — a reminder that timely support can make all the difference.

Strong Partnerships, Stronger Outcomes

Collaboration is at the heart of the Kidney Foundation of Ohio’s work in Ashland County. The Foundation partners closely with social workers at Fresenius Kidney Care Ashland to ensure patients are connected to available services quickly and efficiently.

In addition, the Foundation works with Ashland Transit to establish emergency transportation accounts that dialysis social workers can access on behalf of patients when unexpected needs arise. These partnerships help ensure that transportation challenges never become a barrier to critical treatment.

United Way Support Saves Lives

There are approximately 150 individuals in Ashland County living with kidney disease. Each year, thanks to funding through United Way of Ashland County, the Kidney Foundation of Ohio is able to assist nearly 80 patients with medication assistance, transportation support, and emergency grants.

Without this partnership, many patients would face impossible choices — risking missed treatments or going without essential medications. United Way support ensures that patients can focus on their health, not the obstacles in their way.

Looking Ahead with Purpose and Hope

The future brings hope as patients experience improved quality of life through continued support and access to care. The Kidney Foundation of Ohio remains committed to reducing barriers, expanding education, and helping prevent kidney disease across Ashland County.

By walking alongside patients and families through every stage of their journey, the Foundation is helping ensure that a kidney disease diagnosis is not the end of the story — but a chapter marked by strength, support, and community.
